* Return to Motherland: Drafting the Basic LawBefore the return of the sovereignty of Hong Kong to
China in 1997, the Basic Law was drafted to guarantee the
implementation of "one-country two systems" promised by
Beijing. In 1985, HKPTU's then chairman, Mr. Szeto Wah was
a member of the Basic Law Drafting Committee,
safeguarding the freedom and social orders enjoyed by Hong
Kong citizens.

* Protection of Human Rights: Protest Against
the Public Security OrdinanceIn 1987, the government intended to exert more
control on public gatherings and the press. HKPTU actively
protested against the modification of the Public Security
Ordinance.

Protest Against Nuclear PlantIn 1983, HKPTU and several other organizations staged
a public forum protesting against the unreasonable fare-increases
instituted by the public utilities companies.

* Fund-raising Campaigns for Victims in Pat
Sin Leng FireAt the beginning of 1996, a mountain fire in Pat Sin Leng killed
two teachers and three students, and seriously injured a few other
students. HKPTU organized two fund-raising campaigns
for the victims and their families.
