PTU English Group Workshop
Using colour, sound and touch in the classroom:
A workshop for primary and junior secondary English teachers

Abstract

Good teachers always try to find means to enliven their classrooms and enhance the quality of their teaching. Oftentimes, they find verbal communication inadequate for these. In fact, they may have overlooked the power of non-verbal means of communication such as colour, sound and touch. Colour taps our subconscious mind, arouses feelings and stimulates thinking. Sound can be used to create an atmosphere, introduce a context and enhance participation. Touch can be used to create social bonding and bring a sense of cogency to learning. This workshop aims to illustrate how colour, sound and touch can make teaching and learning in the classroom more pleasurable and effective --- not through theoretical discussion but through interesting hands-on activities. It is hoped that after the workshop participants can bring away activities usable in their own classrooms.
